Protein Labeling
Proteins may be labeled in a variety of ways to allow efficient detection or purification. The labeling methods make use of one or more common functional groups on thee surface of protein molecules.

• Primary amine groups (-NH₂), present at the N-terminus of each po;ypeptide chain and the side chain of lysine residues.
• Sulfhydryl groups (-SH), present on cysteine residues made available by treating disulfide bonds with a reducing agent or by modifying lysine residues with a reagent such as SATA
• Carbohydrate groups, usually present in the Fc region of polyclonal antibodies, may be oxidized to create active aldehydes (-CHO) for coupling.
